Improvements

Total reconstruction projects aim to address crucial issues to ensure safer and more efficient roadways. These projects involve the complete replacement of the pavement structure, safety and drainage upgrades, and widening to improve capacity. Additionally, they include replacing all bridges in the project corridor to meet current design standards.

The reconstruction also addresses maintenance challenges such as milling and paving, which previously required extensive roadwork and exposed workers to traffic risks. Increasing the roadway's capacity is particularly important in high-traffic areas near Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and the Northeast Extension approaching Allentown, where six lanes are needed to handle growing traffic demands. Completing this corridor with three lanes in each direction will eliminate bottlenecks and enhance the overall flow of traffic.

Project Benefits

Our projects are designed to bring significant improvements and benefits to the PA Turnpike. Each project aims to enhance the efficiency, safety, and overall experience for all travelers. Below are the project benefits for this project:

Overhead Bridge Reconstruction

Reconstructing overhead bridges is essential to make way for the widening of the PA Turnpike below, which will improve safety and road conditions.  See below for a list of both active and upcoming bridge reconstruction projects.

Valley Forge Road Bridge (Milepost 324)

Completed Valley Forge Road Bridge

The Valley Forge Road (PA 252) overhead bridge at Milepost 324 was replaced in 2009 (closed on March 2, 2009, and reopened October 26, 2009). It now carries two traffic lanes plus sidewalks, meets current design standards, and clears the future widened Turnpike.

Mill Road Bridge (Milepost 322)

Completed Mill Road Bridge

The Mill Road overhead bridge (Milepost 322) was closed on March 21, 2011 and reopened on November 4, 2011. The new structure provides greater vertical clearance, a wider deck, and room for the future six-lane Turnpike beneath it.

Roadway Reconstruction & Widening

Below is a Typical Section graphic showing the configuration before and after a total reconstruction and widening project.

At project completion, the new roadway will accommodate three travel lanes in each direction, a 26-foot median, and 12-foot outside shoulders.

Noise Impact Analysis

Noise Impact Analysis

A noise impact analysis report was prepared for the entire Milepost 320-326 corridor from the Route 29 Interchange (Milepost 320) to the Valley Forge Interchange (Milepost 326). This report describes the methodology and presents the findings of the traffic noise study conducted for the full-depth reconstruction project of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Chester and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania. The full-depth reconstruction project will convert the existing four-lane roadway with a 10-foot median to a six-lane typical section with a 26-foot median. The purpose of the traffic noise study is (1) to determine if project-related noise impacts will occur and (2) to determine whether noise abatement for affected areas in the form of sound barriers or other mitigation measures would be warranted, feasible, and reasonable, based upon Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) criteria as utilized by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC).

THE NOISE IMPACT ANALYSIS REPORT IS A LARGE FILE (APPROXIMATELY 43MB). DEPENDING ON YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION, DOWNLOADING TIME WILL VARY.
