Construction Activities

Construction began in winter 2026 to widen and reconstruct approximately four miles of the PA Turnpike between the Route 29 Interchange (Milepost 320) and the Valley Forge Service Plaza (Milepost 324) in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. The roadway will expand from four to six lanes, improving safety and capacity.

The project includes bridge replacements, culvert extensions, sound barrier installation, and stormwater upgrades. Completion is expected in five years.

Bridges on Valley Forge Road (SR 252) and Mill Road were also replaced to support the widening.

Construction FAQs

Will construction affect the local roads that pass under the Turnpike?

The below summarizes the traffic conditions of the local roads that travel under the Turnpike in this project:

  • Yellow Springs Road will remain open to traffic during construction, with occasional short-term lane closures.
  • Howells Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the bridge reconstruction, and a short detour will be in place for this duration.
  • Wilson Road will be closed to pedestrian traffic while the structure is replaced, and a pedestrian detour will be in place.

When is construction expected to begin and how long will it take to complete?

H&K Group began work in January 2026 and the project is anticipated to span six years. The six-lane widening of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of 2030, with final completion expected in Summer 2031.

What steps is PTC taking to reduce congestion during construction?

Typically, during peak hours, two lanes will remain open in each direction, with exception for emergencies or maintenance. Digital signs will alert drivers to incidents and possible detours.
