Turnpike Widening to Delaware River Bridge

Project Description

As the first contract for construction of the I95/I276 Interchange connection, Section D10 will widen the Pennsylvania Turnpike Mainline (I276) between the existing I95 roadway and the Delaware River Bridge. The project will include construction of the new Northbound I95 “flyover” structure, which will connect I95 Northbound to I276 Eastbound.

In order to provide sufficient room for the merging of the two roadways, Section D10 consists of widening and reconstruction of approximately 1½ miles of existing I276.

This project also includes:

  • Replacement/construction of new wider bridges over Durham Road, Route 413 and Mill Creek
  • Construction of retaining walls along both eastbound and westbound PA Turnpike Mainline due to widening of the existing roadway
  • Sound barrier walls along both eastbound and westbound areas of the project
  • Replacement/reconstruction of the existing roadways
  • Installation of new drainage systems, construction of basins for erosion control and storm water management
  • Replacement of signing and guide rail
  • Installation of ITS facilities
  • Improvements to local roadways include Durham Road and Route 413 in the vicinity of I276.

Project Schedule

The project schedule anticipates work to begin in the fall of 2014 and continue thru the 2017 construction season.

  • Continued setting precast single face barrier, glare screen barrier and cast-in-place transitions adjacent to the eastbound and westbound I-276 roadway.
  • Placed bituminous paving for Stage 3 median portion of the eastbound and westbound I-276 roadway from the northbound on-ramp to the DVI Interchange.
  • Continued roadwork along Durham and New Rodgers Roads.
  • Continued mill/overlay of existing I-276 pavement.

October/November 2017

  • Continued forming and pouring of cast-in-place bridge parapet on northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Began erecting fencing on top of bridge parapet on northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Started painting the bridge parapet on northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Began groove/grinding of concrete decks for mainline and flyover bridges.
  • Started placement of subbase and bituminous paving on northbound I-95 flyover ramp to eastbound I-276.
  • Constructed bridge parapet on the middle portion of I-276 bridge over Mill Creek.
  • Removed pavement, installed drainage pipe, graded and placed subbase of the Stage 3 median portion of the eastbound and westbound I-276 roadway from I-95 to the DVI Interchange.
  • Set precast single face barrier, glare screen barrier and cast-in-place transitions adjacent to the eastbound and westbound I-276 roadway.
  • Began placement of bituminous paving for Stage 3 median portion of the eastbound and westbound I-276 roadway from I-95 to the DVI Interchange.

  • Started construction of bridge approach slab and parapet of the proposed westbound/eastbound I-276 bridge over New Rodgers Road.
  • Continued construction of bridge approach slabs and parapet of the proposed westbound/eastbound I-276 bridge over Durham Road.
  • Began forming and pouring of cast-in-place bridge parapet on northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Started the differential barrier between Durham Road and New Rodgers Road bridges.
  • Placed single face barrier and moment slabs on northbound I-95 flyover ramp to eastbound I-276.
  • Continued construction with differential barrier at base of I-95 flyover ramp adjacent to westbound roadway.
  • Began bituminous paving of westbound I-276 roadway of the middle portion of the project.
  • Started drainage pipe installation along westbound I-276 roadway.
  • Placed permanent glare screen and single face barrier along the westbound roadway.
  • Installed guiderail adjacent to westbound I-276 roadway.
  • Started to implement Stage 3 traffic switch to westbound I-276 lanes.
  • Began demolition, pile driving, substructure and deck construction of the middle portion of I-276 bridge over Mill Creek.
  • Started pavement removal, installation of drainage pipe, grading and placement subbase of the median portion of the I-276 roadway east and west of the I-276 bridge over Mill Creek.
  • Erected panels for sound barrier walls adjacent to eastbound I-276.
  • Began bituminous paving of Durham and New Rodgers Roads.
  • Continued painting retaining walls, sound barrier walls and bridge substructure.
  • Installed light poles
  • Continued topsoil, seeding, and planting on north side of project.

June/July 2017

  • Continued deck construction for the new westbound/eastbound I-276 bridge over New Rodgers Road.
  • Began construction of bridge approach slabs and parapet underway for the new westbound/eastbound I-276 bridge over Durham Road.
  • Continued installing deck forms and deck reinforcement for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge from Pier 10 to Abutment No. 2.
  • Continued concrete deck pour of the northbound I-95 flyover bridge from Abutment No. 1 to Pier 4 and from Pier 10 to Abutment No. 2.

  • Continued erection of posts and panels for ground mounted sound barrier walls adjacent to westbound I-276.
  • Backfilled MSE walls for eastbound approach from the northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Constructed parapet/approach slab for westbound I-276 bridge over Mill Creek.
  • Placed and graded subbase along east half of westbound roadway.
  • Began bituminous paving along east half of westbound roadway.

April 2017

  • Continued deck construction of the proposed westbound I-276 bridges over Durham Road and New Rodgers Road.
  • Installed tendons at Pier 2 for post tensioning of the integral cap for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Installed deck reinforcement for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge from Abutment No. 1 to Pier 4.
  • Installed overhangs and stay in place forms for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge from Abutment No. 2 to Pier 10.
  • Formed and poured cast-in-place wall and set T-Wall precast segments adjacent to westbound I-276 roadway.
  • Erected posts and panels for ground mounted sound barrier walls adjacent to westbound I-276.
  • Built parallel MSE walls for eastbound approach from northbound I-95 flyover bridge.

  • Built the remaining abutment and pier substructure for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Erected structural steel girders for the northbound I-95 flyover from Abutment No. 1 to Pier 4.
  • Constructed bridge parapet for the southbound I-95 bridge adjacent to Mill Creek.
  • Placed precast concrete segments and precast barrier for T-Walls adjacent to westbound I-276.

September/October 2016

January/February/March 2016

  • Started construction of pier caps for the northbound I-95 flyover bridge.
  • Started construction for the concrete pour for the southbound I-95 flyover bridge adjacent to Mill Creek.
  • Erected precast bulb tee beams on the PA Turnpike Mainline bridges over Durham and New Rodgers roads.
  • Continued T-Wall construction and backfilling along eastbound I-276 roadway widening.
  • Completed installation of sound barrier wall caissons and steel posts along eastbound I-276 roadway widening.
  • Began placement of precast barrier on T-Walls along eastbound I-276 roadway widening.
  • Completed placement of earthwork embankment and grading of subbase for eastbound I-276 widening.

November/December 2015

  • Continued installation of foundations and pier columns for the northbound I95 flyover bridge. Installed new bridge beams for the Mill Creek structure.
  • Continued construction of rock/soil embankments along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline widening area and continued installation of retaining walls to support the future widening.
  • Continued installing support of excavation and construction of new bridge foundations for mainline bridges at Durham Road and Route 413. New bridge beams installed for eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline widening area over Route 413.

September/October 2015

  • Installation of foundations and pier columns for the northbound fly over bridge continued
  • Installed new bridge beams for the Mill Creek structure
  • Continued construction of rock/soil embankments along eastbound widening area and continued installation of retaining walls to support the future widening
  • Continued excavation for, and construction of, new bridge foundations for PA Turnpike Mainline bridges at Durham Rd and Route 413

August 2015

  • Continued installation of foundation and pier columns for the northbound I95 flyover bridge. Contractor installed new bridge beams for the Mill Creek structure.
  • Continued construction of rock/soil embankment along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline widening area and continued installation of retaining walls to support the future widening.
  • Continued installing support of excavation and construction of new bridge foundations for mainline bridges at Durham Road and Route 413.

July 2015

  • Continued installation of foundation and pier columns for the northbound I95 flyover bridge. Contractor preparing for installation of new bridge beams for the Mill Creek structure.
  • Continued construction of rock/soil embankment along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline widening area and started installation of retaining walls to support the future widening.
  • Continued installing support of excavation and demolishing existing mainline bridges at Durham Road and Route 413.

May/June 2015

  • Continued construction of rock embankment along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline just east of Route 413.
  • Started placement of concrete for new Mill Creek Bridge foundations.

December 2014

  • Continued installation of foundation piles for the northbound fly over bridge.
  • Continued clearing of trees along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline from Route 413 to the Route 13 exit.
  • Continued construction of rock embankment along eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline just east of Route 413.

November 2014

  • Installation of the sandbag cofferdam and Phase 1 relocation of Mill Creek was completed.
  • Completed construction of Basin M1 on the eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline.
  • Installation of foundation piles for the northbound flyover bridge was started.
  • Clearing trees at east end for construction of new eastbound off ramp at Route 13.
  • Started construction of rock embankment eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline just east of Route 413.

October 2014

  • Contractor mobilized to the project site.
  • Started installation of Erosion and Sedimentation controls.
  • Started installation of sandbag cofferdam and relocation of Mill Creek.
  • Started construction of basin M1 on eastbound PA Turnpike Mainline.
