Fall 2024 Project Briefing Summary

Thank you to all who took the time to learn about the preliminary engineering of phase of work and provide feedback.

On September 26, 2024, more than 160 people attended the Project Briefing at Somerset Church of the Brethren to learn about the Allegheny Mountain Realignment Project. The goals of the briefing were to:

  • Update elected officials, stakeholders and the community on the status of the project.
  • Provide an overview of the work anticipated during preliminary engineering and the field studies anticipated along the selected alternative.
  • Provide an opportunity to the public to give feedback.

The briefing included a detailed presentation (see link below), and public comments were accepted from 18 attendees. The 30-day comment period closed on October 25, 2024 with 25 comment forms submitted. Primary concerns shared related to the preferred alternative, water quality, habitat protection, safety, community impacts and property access.   The PA Turnpike has reviewed the feedback shared and, where applicable, will incorporate the feedback into the design.

Your feedback is meaningful and will continue to be considered with all feedback throughout the life of the project. The Frequently Asked Questions section of this website will be updated with more detailed responses as the design work continues.

Questions and feedback are welcome at any time. Contact information can be found on the Contact page.

Public Involvement Plan

The PA Turnpike will continue with these opportunities and enhancing communications and outreach to ensure the public and all interested stakeholders are kept informed about this project.

Public involvement has been, and continues to be, a critical part of the Allegheny Mountain Realignment Project. There have been dozens of coordination meetings over the years including public officials’ briefings, special interest group meetings, and general public meetings.

The preliminary design phase will conclude with a public meeting targeted for 2029 during which the community may review the proposed design for the new alignment and the required right of way impacts. At this meeting, the public will have the opportunity to provide comments before the project moves to final design. All feedback will be recorded and considered during the final design phase of the project.

Questions and feedback are welcome at any time. Contact information can be found on the Contact page.

Engagement FAQs

Will property owners be notified when field crews are planning to work on properties?

Yes. Property owners south of the existing tunnel received formal notification letters in July 2024 regarding upcoming fieldwork in the project corridor. Before entering private property, owners will be contacted and informed of the work plan. Contact information was gathered for each property owner. If you are a property owner within the project area and have not received correspondence, please contact the team at Allegheny Mountain Realignment - Contact.

When will refinements of the new alignment be ready for public review?

The Project Team is currently planning to publicly share the new alternative in Q1 of 2029. A great deal of engineering goes into a project of this size and complexity. The team has just begun working on more detailed studies to refine the new alignment.

As preliminary engineering progresses, design elements may change based on various studies such as geotechnical investigations, environmental studies and public input.  Visit the PA Turnpike blog to learn more about how preliminary field work sets the stage for successful projects.

How will property impacts be addressed?

Every effort will be made to minimize property impacts as part of the preliminary engineering phase of work. Access to properties will be maintained at all times during preliminary engineering, final design, and construction.

How can I keep informed of the study’s progress?

The project website will be updated regularly. Please join the mailing list to receive project updates.

Will the completion of U.S. 219 from Meyersdale to Old Salisbury Road change how traffic flows on the Turnpike?

Based on past studies, it is not expected to change traffic flow, but the PA Turnpike will investigate further based on requests from public officials. This project provides the final four-lane highway connection from Somerset, PA, to Interstate 68 in Maryland. It is focused on north/south trips as compared to the east/west flow of traffic along the PA Turnpike. The Project Team will further explore the potential change of the regional traffic patterns during preliminary engineering.
