Travel Advisory: PA Turnpike to close overnight on December 10 between Quakertown and Lehigh Valley Interchanges. The six-hour, 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. I-476 closure is needed for overhead bridge beam removal.
Project Overview and Schedule
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) plans to reconstruct and widen the Northeastern Extension (I-476) from milepost (MP) A53 to 57. The project corridor traverses Lower Macungie Township, passing through Upper Macungie Township, and ending in South Whitehall Township in Lehigh County.
The existing four-lane highway (72' wide) will be reconstructed to accommodate six 12-foot travel lanes with 12-foot left and right shoulders and a 2' median barrier (122' wide). The Project's Design Team continues to develop design plans in support of the environmental permitting process.
As part of this multi-phase project, the PTC is advancing construction on the five overhead bridges. The Tilghman Street Bridge (S.R. 1002) is the first bridge and is currently under construction. These bridges must be lengthened to accommodate the wider turnpike roadway before the reconstruction and widening can begin.
The PTC will coordinate closely with PennDOT and local municipalities as final design and construction progress. The goal is not to disrupt traffic, if possible.
