Milepost 155-160 Reconstruction
Total Reconstruction Project
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this project being built?
This project is part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s (PTC) system wide total reconstruction initiative which entails rebuilding sections of Turnpike from the ground up. The new roadway design will meet current interstate design standards and will provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for Turnpike customers. The existing pavement conditions, current traffic volumes and projected growth dictate widening the mainline from four to six lanes.
When is construction expected to begin and how long will it take to complete?
The project's preliminary design phase is anticipated to begin in September 2024. Further information will be posted as design progresses.
Will the local roads crossing over/under the Turnpike be impacted during construction?
The following local roadways are included in the preliminary design phase of this project:
- SR 0026, Clear Ridge Road (under the PTC mainline)
- SR 1006, Ritchey Road West (over the PTC mainline)
- SR 1006, Ritchey Road East (over the PTC mainline)
- SR 2026, Pointer Road (over the PTC mainline)
Further information will be posted as the design progresses on how the design of the projects impacts each roadway.
How will the PTC determine if and where the sound barriers will be located?
All proposed work will be based on engineering noise studies. As the preliminary design progresses, further information on whether noise walls are warranted will be posted to this site.
What are you doing to protect the environment?
In addition to coordinating with the local townships, the PTC and their design team will work with local, state and federal regulatory agencies such as the Bedford County Conservation Offices, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and local special interest groups to make sure the project is completed with the least impact to the existing environment.
How is this project funded?
The project is funded entirely by Turnpike toll dollars, with no federal funds or state tax dollars involved.
How much will the project cost?
Further information will be posted as the preliminary design phase of this section progresses. However, the estimated cost is will be in the range of $200-$220 million.
Will tolls have to be increased to pay for this project?
No. The Turnpike does not raise tolls to fund individual projects.
