Improvements

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is committed to enhancing travel safety and efficiency across its network. As part of this initiative, we are undertaking comprehensive bridge improvement projects aimed at ensuring long-term reliability. These projects involve critical updates to bridge structures, including structural enhancements, roadway alignment adjustments, and improved vertical clearances. These enhancements will not only prolong the lifespan of our bridges but also optimize their capacity to accommodate increasing traffic demands. 

The bridge improvement projects are designed to deliver significant benefits to our travelers. By addressing structural concerns and improving alignment, we will enhance overall safety and reduce congestion, ensuring smoother and more predictable drives.

Overhead Bridge Reconstruction

Reconstructing overhead bridges is essential to make way for the widening of the PA Turnpike below, which will improve safety and road conditions.  See below for a list of both active and upcoming bridge reconstruction projects.

Bridge WB‑208 (NS Railroad #2)

WB‑208 Norfolk Southern bridge

Sister structure Replacement of Bridge No. WB-208, a single span thru-girder railroad structure carrying Norfolk Southern Railroad over the Pennsylvania Turnpike with a 2-span thru-girder structure; to construct PP 12.58 Eastbound, a post and plank retaining wall; and to construct two railroad roadbeds and associated drainage features (completed 2015).

Bridge WB‑207 (NS Railroad #1)

WB‑207 Norfolk Southern bridge

The first of two Norfolk Southern Railroad crossings, WB‑207 replaced a single‑span truss with a two‑span steel thru‑girder bridge, raising vertical clearance for the future six‑lane Turnpike (opened 2015).

Bridge WB‑206 (Foxwood Road)

WB‑206 Homewood Viaduct replacement

This project provided for the replacement of four (4) spans of the existing WB-206 structure over the Turnpike (The Homewood Viaduct) with (3) spans. The existing spans consist of one concrete T-beam span, one steel girder span, one concrete slab span and one concrete box beam span. The project also includes installation of a sanitary sewer and water lines, and realigning approximately 1,650 ft of Foxwood Road (T-655) (substantial completion 2017).

Roadway Reconstruction & Widening

Below is a Typical Section graphic showing the configuration before and after a total reconstruction and widening project.

At project completion, the new roadway will accommodate three travel lanes in each direction, a 26-foot median, and 12-foot outside shoulders.

Safety Workshop: September 2023

On September 19, 2023, Beaver River Bridge General Contractor Joseph B. Fay hosted a safety banner signing for the project. The event was attended by personnel from Joseph B. Fay, subcontractors, suppliers, PA Turnpike, and ALCM construction management staff. The Fay Leadership Team spoke to their company philosophy “Living to Be Safe and Accident Free” and their commitment to safety on the project.
