How the PA Turnpike Drives Economic Impact

PA Turnpike spanning across a valley

The PA Turnpike is more than a roadway. It is one of Pennsylvania’s most critical pieces of economic infrastructure. For more than 85 years, the PA Turnpike has connected communities, supported commerce, and fueled growth across the Commonwealth.

Despite the initial opposition to its construction, the Pennsylvania Turnpike became a tourist destination and received praise from local communities for its safe, modern and efficient connection to destinations throughout the Commonwealth.

Now, people and goods could travel through long stretches of uninterrupted roadway and tunnels to get to parts of the Commonwealth. Proximity to the PA Turnpike continues to attract businesses that benefit from access to major transportation routes, leading to improved opportunities for job creation, increased economic activity and greater employment prospects.

With Open Road Tolling (ORT) launching systemwide in January 2027, the PA Turnpike is poised to strengthen its position as an economic catalyst.

The PA Turnpike Connects Communities and Commerce

The PA Turnpike connects the Commonwealth’s major economic corridors. During its first year of operation, the PA Turnpike carried almost twice the traffic than originally predicted. Today, more than 500,000 customers rely on our system daily.

From Pittsburgh to Harrisburg to Philadelphia, the roadway supports efficient movement of goods and helps people travel between the regions where they live, work and play. We also connect rural communities to metropolitan job centers and support commerce across the Northeast and Midwest.

The $164 million fiber optic network increases bandwidth connectivity across the Commonwealth. In addition to supporting future initiatives and Open Road Tolling conversion, the network helps bridge the digital divide by bringing high-speed, broadband access closer to rural areas.

The PA Turnpike Supports Business and Industry

The PA Turnpike has historically played a vital role in fostering economic growth in local communities throughout the Commonwealth.

Manufacturers, logistics providers, agricultural producers, energy companies, tourism destinations, and small businesses rely on the PA Turnpike daily. Reliable transportation infrastructure is essential to supply chains, workforce mobility and economic competitiveness.

Access to the PA Turnpike has been proven to spur economic activity in communities where entry and exit points are located.

The Southern Beltway in western Pennsylvania is a recent example. Fifteen years after its initial segment, the Findlay Connector, opened in 2006. Just over five years since its final link connected the PA Turnpike to Interstate 79, the corridor has delivered more than 4 million square feet of development and a growing tax base for Allegheny County, Findlay Township, and West Allegheny schools. It created over 3,000 new jobs and generated an estimated $11.5 million in annual real estate tax revenue and $8 million in realty transfer taxes. This success has prompted plans for even more development along the Southern Beltway.

The Southern Beltway also provides better access to sites being developed along the 52-mile stretch of private, commercial and industrial lands near the Pittsburgh International Airport known as the Energy Commerce & Innovation Corridor (ECIC). The link also saves airport-bound travelers an extra 10 minutes.

Across the state, Chester County’s State Route 29 Interchange, completed in 2012, is another example of successful, roadway-adjacent development. The State Route 29 (SR29) Interchange provides a direct connection to a large industrial complex in suburban Philadelphia, serving as a driver for significant growth. Studies link it to the creation of 10,000 new jobs and $30 million in new state and local tax revenue.

ORT Paves the Way for Increased Economic Development Opportunities Along the PA Turnpike

ORT is a cashless, free-flowing toll collection system. Tolls are charged electronically as customers drive without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures—called gantries—located between interchanges. Equipment on the gantry and on the roadway classifies and identifies the vehicle and electronically processes tolls.

With ORT, the PA Turnpike can build new access points at a fraction of the cost and in significantly less time than under traditional tolling, increasing access through or improved connections that enhance mobility and ease traffic at nearby interchanges and on adjoining roads.

ORT requires a much smaller environmental footprint than traditional tolling with the removal of current toll booth infrastructure across the system and the reduced need for land of future ORT access points. The last traditional plaza, the Neshaminy Falls Mainline Toll Plaza, opened in 2016 and cost approximately $90 million. In contrast, new ORT gantries cost around $5 million.

ORT allows more flexible interchange design, enabling reconfiguration of existing access points, or new ones, that improve access and connectivity. Thanks to ORT, new interchanges like State Route 130, Lafayette Street Interchange and the Breezewood Interchange project are now possible.
