Understanding the Value of E-ZPass for Traveling the PA Turnpike
When the PA Turnpike converted to a cashless system in 2020, more than 85% of customers across the Commonwealth were already enjoying the increased ease of travel with E-ZPass. Beyond improving the driving experience, E-ZPass provides our customers with significant savings – in fact, up to 50% on tolls when Open Road Tolling officially launches in January.
E-ZPass can be used across more than 19 states and is the most cost-effective way to travel on the PA Turnpike. Here are some other essential facts you might not know about E-ZPass.
Provides Flexible Payment Options
There are two ways to manage your E-ZPass account payments.
Auto-Replenish: Each time your E-ZPass account balance reaches a low balance threshold, we will automatically replenish using the bank account or credit card listed on your account. This way, you always have a balance to pay your tolls.
Manual Replenish: Don’t want to put a bank account or credit card on file? No problem. Non-commercial customers can manually replenish their account, including with our newest payment options, Google and Apple Pay. Our customer service center will send you a notice when your account balance gets to $15 or less.
Mounting Your E-ZPass Transponder Properly Matters
As you drive through a toll point with an E-ZPass transponder, our toll equipment captures your trip information so that we can calculate the toll and deduct it from your E-ZPass pre-paid account balance. If your transponder is not mounted correctly, you could be charged the wrong toll. Check out this video with instructions on how to properly mount your transponder. When Open Road Tolling launches in January, this will be even more important to ensure that your billing is seamless and accurate.
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for Properly Mounting:
DO clean the area on the windshield before mounting.
DO press firmly when mounting.
DO regularly monitor to make sure the mounting is still in place.
DO call Customer Service if you have any questions or suspect your transponder may need replaced.
DO let us know if you have any exterior features that may be impacting your transponder.
DO NOT mount the transponder vertically.
DO NOT mount it inside of black dots or the shaded area on your windshield.
DO NOT manually hold the transponder.
Multiple Vehicles Can Be Registered to Your E-ZPass Account
You can register up to four vehicles to your E-ZPass transponder. You can add or remove vehicles at any time by using the PA Toll Pay app or through your E-ZPass Account.
Need to move the transponder between vehicles? You can request extra mounting strips by contacting the E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 1-877-736-6727 to request them. You can also request them online through your E-ZPass account, via the PA Toll Pay app or by visiting the PA Turnpike E-ZPass Customer Service Center.
Rental Vehicles Can Be Registered to Your E-ZPass Account
A rental can be included as one of the four vehicles registered to your account. Simply add it as a “Temporary Vehicle” to your account and then remove it when you return it to avoid incurring tolls. If you decide to register your rental under your E-ZPass account, you will want to make sure your rental vehicle company does not have a tolling program that automatically adds tolls to your rental cost. When adding a rental vehicle to your account, always be sure to include “start/end dates and times” when prompted. Customers are responsible for any tolls incurred while the vehicle registration is listed on their account.
You Must Keep Your E-ZPass Account Up to Date
You are responsible for keeping your account information current. That includes payment methods and vehicle information. You can easily make updates by accessing your account online, via our mobile app, PA Toll Pay, or by calling the PA Turnpike E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 1-877-736-6727. When prompted, say "Customer Service" then select 1 to make the changes.
Lost or Stolen Transponders Must Be Reported
It is very important to take immediate action with a lost or stolen E-ZPass to avoid additional charges. Customers can deactivate (or re-add) the transponder themselves through a check box option, “Lost/Stolen” via the PA Toll Pay.
Customers should also report a lost or stolen transponder by calling the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 1-877-736-6727 and speaking with a Customer Service Representative, reporting it on the phone system (IVR), or sending it over the web at our Help Center. Please provide the complete 11-digit transponder number for each individual transponder being reported.
You are responsible for the replacement fee and all charges that are incurred prior to deactivating your transponder or reporting it as lost or stolen to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission E-ZPass Customer Service Center.
You Can Give E-ZPass as a Gift
The PA Turnpike Commission offers E-ZPass gift certificates as a convenient way of gift giving.
