Project Overview

Phase 1 - Mainline (I-476) - From MP A37.4 (Clump Road) to MP A43.3 (John Fries Highway - SR663) total reconstruction and widening, and Turnpike bridge over Kumry Road (SR 4055) replaced. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2021, or later.

Phase 2 - Mainline (I-476) - From MP A43.3 (John Fries Highway - SR 663) to MP A44.5 total reconstruction and widening. Quakertown Interchange reconstructed, and John Fries Highway bridge over Turnpike replaced. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024, or later.

Final Design began in 2014 for the total reconstruction and widening of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeastern Extension (I-476) north of Clump Road (milepost A38) to north of Steinsburg Road (milepost A44.5). The existing four-lane highway (74' wide) will be reconstructed to accommodate six 12-foot travel lanes with 12-foot left and right shoulders and 2' median barrier (122' wide). The project will also include the reconstruction of the Quakertown Interchange and the removal and replacement of five mainline bridges. The project corridor traverses Salford Township in Montgomery County and West Rockhill and Milford Townships in Bucks County.

The project also includes the replacement of the following bridges over the Turnpike, prior to the Turnpike widening.

  • Upper Ridge Road Bridge (State Route 4033)
    Construction completed – new bridge open to traffic as of 6/30/2021
  • Trumbauersville Road Bridge (State Route 4051)
    Construction completed – new bridge open to traffic as of 11/22/2017
  • Steinsburg Road Bridge (State Route 4059)
    Construction completed – new bridge open to traffic as of 11/22/2017

The Project's Design Team continues to develop design plans in support of the environmental permitting process. An Open House Plans Display was held on December 3, 2014 to introduce the Preliminary Design Plans to the Public. The materials from the Open House can be viewed on the Public Involvement page.

At project completion, the section will consist of 6 travel lanes (3 westbound and 3 eastbound), with a 26-foot median, and 12-foot outside shoulders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PTC going to do to relieve congestion throughout construction?

During peak travel times between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. two lanes of traffic will be maintained in both directions. Exceptions include emergency roadway repairs and daytime work performed by Turnpike Maintenance requiring a lane closure. Once construction begins, widening will occur to the outside lanes first; traffic will then be shifted to the new roadway as construction continues on the remaining inside lanes. Dynamic Message Signs will be installed at key locations prior to the start of roadway construction in order to provide motorists advance notice of incidents and to inform motorists well in advance of the incident location so they can prepare to exit the Turnpike if necessary.

Does the PTC expect to continue widening to the north?

Yes. Preliminary design is progressing on the reconstruction and widening of the Northeast Extension between mileposts A44 and A57 (just north of and including the Lehigh Valley Interchange)

Will tolls have to be increased to pay for this project?

No. The Turnpike does not raise tolls to fund individual projects.

How much will the project cost?

The estimated cost is approximately $200 million.

How is this project funded?

The project is funded entirely by Turnpike toll dollars, with no federal funds or state tax dollars involved.

What are you doing to protect the environment?

In addition to coordinating with the local townships, the PTC continues to work with local, state and federal regulatory agencies such as the Montgomery and Bucks County Conservation Offices, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and local special interest groups to make sure the project is completed with the least impact to the existing environment.

How did the PTC determine where the sound barriers will be located?

Based on engineering noise studies, no sound barriers are included in this project.

When will the house at 1890 Kumry Road that the PTC acquired for stormwater basins be demolished?

Demolition of the house at 1890 Kumry Road Road is anticipated to be completed in 2021.

Will the local roads crossing under the Turnpike be impacted during construction?

Kumry Road will remain open to traffic during construction, but will occasionally be reduced to one lane, or closed for short periods of time. These short-term impacts are required to facilitate construction of the Turnpike bridge over the road and the installation of drainage pipes and resurfacing of the Kumry Road.

When is construction expected to begin and how long will it take to complete?

The project is planned to go out to bid in September 2021 and construction is expected to begin in January 2022. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 3 years with the Turnpike open to 6 lanes of traffic by November 2024. There may be some additional landscaping and seeding associated with converting the stormwater basins to their permanent condition that needs to be completed in the Spring of 2025 depending on weather and timing. The Contractor will provide a more detailed schedule once the project is awarded. Regular four week look ahead and website is update monthly on the project website as construction progresses, providing advanced notice of specific work activities.

Why is this project being built?

This project is part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s (PTC) $2 billion system wide total reconstruction initiative which entails rebuilding sections of the 60-plus-year-old Turnpike’s Northeast Extension from the ground up. The new roadway design meets current interstate design standards and will provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for Turnpike customers. The existing pavement conditions, current traffic volumes and projected growth dictate widening the mainline from four to six lanes.
