Corridor Overview
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is undertaking a significant, multi-phase project to improve mobility, connectivity and safety along the Northeast Extension of Interstate 476. The A43–A57 corridor stretches from milepost A43 in Bucks County to milepost A57 in Lehigh County. Planned upgrades include reconstructing aging infrastructure, expanding the roadway to three lanes in each direction, and modernizing bridges, drainage and interchange configurations to meet current and future travel needs.
Construction will be sequenced to maintain continuous operation, with safety and funding availability as top priorities.
The southernmost segment begins with widening the roadway from mileposts A43 to A44 and a comprehensive reconstruction of the Quakertown Interchange. This phase features new ramps, replacement of the State Route 663 bridges, interchange roadway reconstruction and added maintenance access at Kumry and Steinsburg roads. These improvements are designed to enhance traffic flow and lay the groundwork for seamless integration with future phases.
Northward, reconstruction and widening continue, with the corridor divided into three project sections: A44–A48, A48–A53 and A53–A57. Work includes full-depth reconstruction, replacement of mainline bridges, expanded stormwater systems and long-term infrastructure upgrades. Key overhead bridge replacements will continue to advance to support future corridor expansion.
A construction schedule for all four sections is available below. The A48–A53 segment has been delayed due to archaeological coordination with agencies and tribal communities.
When completed, the A43–A57 corridor will eliminate bottlenecks, improve safety and support long-term regional mobility across one of the Turnpike’s busiest stretches.
