Project Overview
This $117M project will consist of the staged construction for full depth reconstruction and widening of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. Project limits are from milepost 101.69 (approximately eight miles west of the Somerset Interchange, Exit 110) to milepost 109.10 (approximately one mile west of the Somerset Interchange, Exit 110) in Somerset County. The mainline Turnpike will be realigned at two locations to straighten out the curves and improve site distance for traveler safety. These locations are from milepost 105.7 to 106.1 and milepost 107.1 to 107.6. The project includes the construction of two box culverts, one box culvert extension, four arch culvert extensions, three retaining walls, one soil nail wall, three sign structures, and one digital message sign.
New Enterprise Stone and Lime, Company was awarded the construction contract in December 2020. Work will begin in January of 2021. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
Update:
In November 2023, westbound from MP 104.2 to 102 was open to 3 lanes of traffic. Eastbound traffic from MP 102 to 104.5 was moved off of the new shoulder, but still remains in 2 lanes. Construction continues of the median and left lanes between MP 104.5 and 109. This work is expected to be completed by the fall of 2024.
5/2024 Update: The contractor has completed a majority of the drainage, earthwork, and grading of the median roadway between MP 104 and 109 and will continue to pave through the summer. New Enterprise has also begun some of the Stormwater Basin and Rain Garden conversions for post construction storm water.
