Breezewood Interchange – A New Chapter for a Historic Connection
The PA Turnpike is beginning an exciting new chapter for one of its most well-known interchanges – Breezewood. With aging infrastructure and new technology like Open Road Tolling (ORT) on the horizon, we now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to completely reimagine the Breezewood Interchange—improving safety, traffic flow, and long-term mobility for travelers, businesses, and the surrounding community.
This new direct connection will allow travelers passing through to remain on the interstate, while offering those visiting Breezewood a safer, less congested entrance into the community. In addition to improving traffic flow, the project supports local access and responds to long-standing requests from community leaders for improved connectivity.
Planning for the Future
The redesigned interchange will maintain local access to SR30 in Breezewood, while also providing a direct connection to I-70, addressing long-standing congestion and safety issues while making travel through the corridor faster and more efficient. In early 2024, the PA Turnpike selected Alfred Benesch & Company as the lead design consultant to begin preliminary and final design work for this transformational project.
Why It Matters
The Breezewood area plays a major role in Pennsylvania’s transportation system, connecting thousands of drivers each day. In 2022 alone, nearly 5.5 million vehicles entered or exited the Turnpike at Breezewood—and more than one-third of them were trucks. The new interchange design will help reduce delays, eliminate traffic signals along the interstate route, and support the growing demand for smoother, more reliable freight and passenger travel.
