Geotechnical fieldwork underway

Spring/Summer 2026 Update

  • Mainline I-476: The project is currently in the final design phase of work.  Design is 30% complete. The next major design milestone is 60%, tentatively scheduled for the end of 2029. Environmental studies continue to advance in support of the environmental permitting process. Fieldwork is also underway to inform the design team of key features as they make every effort to minimize impacts to the community and the environment.  You may come across field crews conducting:
    • Geotechnical Work - Continued drilling will occur as the design progresses. *
    • Environmental Work - Investigations regarding cultural resources are in progress.

*Drilling activity will take place adjacent to the Pennsylvania Turnpike to evaluate subsurface conditions and identify potential risks like unstable soil to inform design and construction decisions. Property owners may see drill rigs, similar to the one in the picture above. If there is a disturbance to the area, it will be restored to the original condition as much as possible after completion of the drilling.
