Project Overview
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is planning to upgrade their maintenance facility in Harrison City, located along the eastbound side of the PA Turnpike (I‑76) near Milepost 63.22. This project will support day‑to‑day roadway operations and improve the Commission’s ability to respond to weather events, roadway maintenance needs, and facility services in Westmoreland County.
The new facility will include several purpose‑built structures such as an office and truck maintenance building, a logistics center, storage buildings, a salt shed, a pump house and a fuel island. These buildings are designed to create a modern, efficient workspace for Turnpike crews and will replace aging infrastructure in the area.
A key feature of the project is the addition of a microgrid designed to improve energy reliability and sustainability. This system will include solar panels and natural‑gas‑powered generators that help supply energy to the facility. Along with this, the project will also upgrade the surrounding site with new pavement, utilities, fencing, landscaping and environmentally responsible systems for managing salt, brine and fuel.
