PA Turnpike Announces Reconstruction Project in Somerset County

Total road reconstruction project between mileposts 102 and 109 to start Jan. 11.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is announcing a total reconstruction and widening project getting underway Jan. 11 in Somerset County between mileposts 102 and 109 of the PA Turnpike.

The $117 million project, which is being paid with toll dollars as part of the PA Turnpike’s capital plan, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.

SAI Consulting Engineers will oversee the project that New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc. will be constructing. The work will include, but is not limited to, moving 2.7 million cubic yards of dirt, installing several storm water controls including basins and rain gardens plus building three retaining walls. Once work is completed, there will be three travel lanes in each direction.

After this seven-mile stretch is finished, the PA Turnpike will have totally reconstructed 55 miles of roadway between Irwin Interchange (Exit # 67) and the Allegheny Tunnel (milepost 122).
