Seven Must-Visit Summer Escapes Along the PA Turnpike

Lehigh Pa Turnpike Bridge

There is something magical about summer in Pennsylvania – the warm breeze through your windows, the scent of sunscreen and campfires and the joy of chasing sunsets across rolling hills. If you are planning a summer road trip, the Pennsylvania Turnpike is more than a highway; it’s your ticket to some of the state’s most unforgettable adventures.

We have rounded up seven summer-inspired destinations – some just off the PA Turnpike, others “off the beaten path” – to make your road trip one to remember.

Exit 266 (Lebanon-Lancaster, heading from the east)

Exit 247 (Harrisburg East, heading from the west)

Is it really summer without a trip to Hersheypark? From soaring roller coasters and refreshing water slides to the sweet aroma of cocoa in the air, Hersheypark is the ultimate summer playground. Let the kids take the wheel on the Twin Turnpike ride, cool off at The Boardwalk – the water park inside the park – or visit Hershey’s Chocolate World to craft your own candy bar. It's a rush of summer fun that never gets old.

Nearest Exit: 28 (Cranberry Interchange)

Take a rural detour and then stretch your legs at Venango County’s Freedom Falls, a stunning 20-foot waterfall nestled in the Allegheny region. A short hike leads you to this natural beauty, where the cool mist and shady woods provide the perfect summer refreshment. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to kick off your shoes and wade in.

Nearest Exit: 201 (Blue Mountain)

This one is a haul (about two and a half hours off the Turnpike), but if you are looking for quirky, Doolittle Station in DuBois is a one-of-a-kind roadside stop that feels like stepping into a storybook. Have lunch in a vintage train car, tour a mini alien museum, grab ice cream at the retro diner, and check out the onsite brewery. It’s weird, wonderful and perfect for Instagram-able photos.

Exit 180 (Fort Littleton, heading from the west)

Exit 189 (Willow Hill, heading from the east)

Make your way to Cowans Gap State Park for the ultimate summer day in the great outdoors. Set up your beach chair along the lake, go for a swim, rent a kayak, take your mountain bike out for a spin or hike the trails surrounded by lush greenery. The park is ideal for a spontaneous picnic or planned overnight camping stop.

Exit 226 (Carlisle Interchange)

Take a leisurely stroll through downtown Carlisle, where historic brick buildings, cozy cafés and charming boutiques line the streets. Grab a cold brew at a local coffee shop, pick up something delicious at Farmers on the Square (held each Wednesday), take in live events at the Carlisle Theatre, or stumble upon unique activities that make this slice of Americana especially delightful when the weather’s warm.

Nearest Exits: 95 (Pocono, from the east), 14 (Blairsville from the west off the Amos K. Hutchison Bypass)

Another fun one for the off-road warriors. Tucked away in a forested corner of Clinton County, Rosecrans Falls is a hidden treasure for waterfall lovers. The shaded trail leading to the falls is cool and quiet, just the kind of peaceful break every road trip needs. Bring a camera, a friend, and maybe a snack to enjoy near the water’s edge.

Nearest Exits: 95 (Pocono, from the east) or 226 (Carlisle, from the west)

Knoebels is a classic amusement park nestled in the woods. It's ideal for families looking for a budget-friendly day of fun. Admission is free and guests pay only for the old-school rides and activities you want to try. There is also a giant pool, golfing and more. Enjoy delicious park food while making memories at this beloved summer staple. There are also several covered bridges within a five-mile radius.
