Understanding the PA Turnpike’s 2026 Toll Rates

Open Road Tolling Gantry

Each July, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission votes on the following year’s toll schedule. We want to continue to keep our customers well-informed about the new toll schedule and the reasons behind these changes.

There Will Be A 4% Toll Rate Increase In 2026

The increase, which will be effective January 4, 2026, is in accordance with our Act 44 plan for toll rates along the PA Turnpike. The increase of 4% is the lowest rate increase since 2014 and will be used entirely to repay Act 44 debt service.

On the mainline of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and on the Northeast Extension, where tolls are calculated per segment and distance traveled, the Act 44 increase moves the per-mile rate from $.07 to $.073 and the segment fee from $1.09 to $1.13. On all other extensions, where the tolling infrastructure doesn’t support a per-segment and distance traveled rate, the Act 44 increase will be a straight 4% increase to existing trips. Toll rates round up to the nearest penny.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissioners approved the toll rate at their July 1 meeting.

PA Turnpike Toll Rate Increases Are a Direct Result of Act 44

Since the legislation passed in 2007, tolls on the PA Turnpike have increased as a direct result of Act 44. In lieu of raising taxes for transportation, Act 44 of 2007, which was amended by Act 89 in 2013, obligated the Commission to assist in funding statewide ground transportation beyond PA Turnpike operations.

Since 2008, we have provided more than $8 billion to the Commonwealth for this purpose. Act 44 debt service drives the annual toll increases. Prior to Act 44, the Turnpike only raised tolls five times in 64 years.

PA Turnpike Toll Rates Remain Competitive

Despite the imposed debt of Act 44, the PA Turnpike maintains toll rates that are middle of the pack as compared to other U.S. toll roads, bridges and tunnels. We have also been able to maintain the same toll increase schedule since the initial Act 44 repayment plan was enacted. We’ve achieved both through controlled spending, efficient debt management and innovation.

The PA Turnpike Has Flexible Payment Options

We strive to provide customers with the best service and value, and all drivers can save 50% on tolls with E-ZPass, the most cost-effective way to travel the PA Turnpike. More than 85% of our customers recognize E-ZPass’ value and use it to travel our roadway. Those drivers are largely satisfied with their experience due to cost, convenience and time savings.

We are also committed to evolving with our customers’ needs. We offer more ways to pay, including expanded, convenient payment options with Google and Apple Pay. Cash payment for Toll By Plate invoices or E-ZPass account fund additions is accepted through KUBRA, a nationwide network of more than 75,000 retail locations.

Frequently Asked Questions About PA Turnpike Toll Increases

Did the PA Turnpike increase tolls for 2026?

Yes. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved a 4% toll increase effective January 4, 2026. This increase supports debt obligations outlined in Act 44.

Why are PA Turnpike tolls increasing again?

The annual toll increases are driven by Act 44, a law passed in 2007 requiring the Turnpike to help fund transportation initiatives across Pennsylvania. Rather than raising taxes, Act 44 used toll revenue to support state infrastructure.

How is the 2026 toll increase being used?

The entire 4% increase for 2026 is dedicated to paying off the existing Act 44 debt service. It does not fund new projects or internal operations.

How does the PA Turnpike compare to other toll roads?

Even with Act 44 increases, the PA Turnpike remains competitive. Toll rates are in the mid-range when compared to similar U.S. toll roads, bridges and tunnels.

Can I still save money on my PA Turnpike tolls?

What value do I get from paying PA Turnpike tolls?
