Expanded Cash Payment Options Now Available for PA Turnpike Customers
Middletown, PA —The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) is committed to providing customers accessible toll payment options that suit their preferences. In collaboration with KUBRA, the PA Turnpike recently expanded its cash payment network, adding more than 350 new retail locations across the Commonwealth.
“We are committed to evolving and meeting the diverse needs of our customers, and that includes deploying advanced technology that cater to customer preferences for toll payment options," said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. "Whether digital options or cash, we have taken steps to make payment easy and convenient for our customers. By extending our KUBRA network, we’re providing additional convenience for cash-paying customers.”
When the partnership launched in 2022, KUBRA offered more than 70,000 retail locations nationwide. Now, its network includes more than 85,000 locations with more than 15 different retailers.
“At KUBRA, we strive to make every customer experience better, and we’re incredibly proud to support the PA Turnpike in expanding toll payment accessibility through our Retail Cash Payments solution,” said Rick Watkin, President and CEO of KUBRA. “By enabling more convenient cash options, PA Turnpike is making it easier for all customers to pay in the way that works best for them.”
Following a series of pilots throughout the state, the PA Turnpike moved to a cashless tolling system in 2020. This past January, the PA Turnpike launched its next phase with Open Road Tolling (ORT) east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension. ORT is the culmination of the PA Turnpike’s decade-long journey to modernize operations and meet customer expectations for seamless, nonstop travel.
In an ORT system, tolls are charged electronically as customers drive at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping beneath overhead structures — called gantries — located between interchanges. Instead of tolls being assessed at traditional legacy plazas, customers are charged at gantries in the roadway, allowing safer, smoother traffic flows.
Despite moving to a cashless system, the PA Turnpike partnered with KUBRA in 2022 for customers who prefer paying with cash, do not have a bank account or do not wish to tie up funds in an E-ZPass account until they travel.
To use cash, customers select the “pay” option when accessing their account online or via the PA Turnpike’s on-the-go account management app, PA Toll Pay. After selecting from a list of nearby participating retailers, customers must generate and print a pay slip — which includes a $1.50 service fee — before stopping at the retail location to make a PA Turnpike toll payment in cash.
The expanded KUBRA network is the latest in a series of enhancements the PA Turnpike’s made to improve customer payment options. Last fall, the Turnpike began accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay. Additionally, the Turnpike continues to offer the following methods for invoice payments: by mail, by phone, online, using a mobile app and by walk-in at its Harrisburg Customer Service Center.
Available in the Apple Store and on Google Play, the PA Toll App, which has more than two million downloads, gives travelers easy access to transactions, monthly statements, available balance visibility and a host of other services, such as payments and E-ZPass transponder ordering.
Toll revenue directly funds the PA Turnpike’s construction, operation and maintenance.
