Milling and Repaving at Lehigh Tunnel This Month

Milling and Repaving at Lehigh Tunnel This Month

Temporary lane restrictions may cause delays for motorists

LEHIGH & CARBON COUNTY, Pa. —The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) advises motorists traveling on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476) to be prepared for single lane patterns and bi-directional traffic in the Lehigh Tunnels, between milepost A70.2 and A71.9. Motorists should expect delays, especially during the peak hours from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., and seek alternate routes, where possible.

Starting Sunday, April 13, PA Turnpike crews will close the northbound tunnel beginning at 8 p.m. through Wednesday, April 16 at 6 a.m. One-lane of traffic in each direction will flow through the southbound tunnel during this time.

The reverse is planned for after the Easter holiday weekend, pending weather. Starting Sunday, April 27, PA Turnpike crews will close the southbound tunnel beginning at 8 p.m. through Wednesday, April 30 at 6 a.m. One-lane of traffic in each direction will flow through the northbound tunnel during this time.

The restrictions are necessary to allow crews to safely perform milling of roadway and placing new pavement inside the tunnels. Traffic will flow normally in both tunnels outside those days and hours.

Motorists should stay alert when approaching and entering the tunnels. Drivers are urged to turn on headlights, remain in their lane, follow posted speed limits and keep an adequate following distance from the vehicle ahead.

Anyone who experiences car trouble and cannot safely exit the tunnels, should stay in their car, put on their hazard lights, dial *11 via mobile phone and wait for assistance. Tunnel personnel monitor closed-circuit cameras and will send help for disabled vehicles.

Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions. Message boards will be activated to update motorists of any changes to the schedule caused by inclement weather or unforeseen traffic conditions.

To report an incident or other emergency on the PA Turnpike, dial *11 via mobile phone. To learn more about PA Turnpike conditions, use one of these resources:
