Early Morning Road Closure Scheduled Between Pittsburgh and Irwin Interchanges

Early Morning Road Closure Scheduled Between Pittsburgh and Irwin Interchanges

Crews to remove superstructure of former Harvison Road Bridge

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) advises motorists that the PA Turnpike will be closed in both directions between the Pittsburgh (Exit 57) and Irwin (Exit 67) Interchanges on Sunday, September 29 between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.

During that time, crews will be removing the superstructure of the former Harvison Road bridge in Penn Township, Westmoreland County, that is over the PA Turnpike (Interstate 76) at milepost 61.68.

During the closure to remove the bridge superstructure, the following suggested detours will be in place:

EASTBOUND DETOUR WESTBOUND DETOUR
❖ U.S. Route 22 East, 10.5 miles ❖ U.S. Route 30 East, 4.6 miles
❖ PA Toll 66 South, 7 miles ❖ PA Toll 66 North, 7 miles
❖ U.S. Route 30 West, 4.6 miles ❖ US 22 West, 10.5 miles
❖ Re-enter Turnpike at Irwin Interchange #67 ❖ Re-Enter Turnpike at Pittsburgh Interchange #57

Preceding the closure, traffic will be reduced to one lane in the immediate vicinity of MP 61.68 in both directions beginning Saturday, September 28 at 7 p.m. to allow for a crane to be safely set up.

Pennsylvania State Police and PA Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on the closure. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

As a precursor to the total reconstruction and widening of the PA Turnpike between mileposts 57-67, the Turnpike announced last month that the bridge that carried Harvison Road over the Turnpike would be removed and would not be replaced. The full MP 57-67 project is currently in the design phase and will be split into two sections. For the east section (MP 61-67), construction is anticipated to begin in 2032. Construction of the west section (MP 57-61) will be determined by the first section's schedule and available funding.
