Planned Closure Scheduled This Weekend on Northeast Extension
Overnight work scheduled to minimize traffic delays for customers.
CARBON COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists traveling on the Northeast Extension (I-476) in Carbon County that there will be planned closure in both directions between Mahoning Valley (Exit 74) and State Route 903 (Exit 87) from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 23. The planned closure is required for bridge work.
During the closure, traffic will be directed off the Turnpike and drivers can use the following suggested detours to get back on the Turnpike:
Northbound Detour:
- US 209 South 6.5 miles
- PA 903 North 10.4 miles
- Re-enter at the PA 903 Interchange #A87
Southbound Detour:
- PA 903 South 10.4 miles
- US 209 North 6.4 miles
- Re-enter at the Mahoning Valley Interchange #A74
Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on this closure. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

This roadwork is part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC)'s mission to operate a safe, reliable, customer-valued toll road system that supports national mobility and commerce.
In 2023, the PTC supported more than $690 million in construction bids for roadway maintenance and improvements to modernize the Turnpike and improve customer experience, including resurfacing more than 46 miles of roadway, undertaking total reconstruction of 27 miles of roadway, an all-time high, and replacing two major bridges at Beaver River and Hawk Falls.
