PA Turnpike Encourages Drivers to Remain Vigilant Beyond Distracted Driving Month

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Middletown, PA — As national Distracted Driving Month winds down, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) is encouraging drivers to continue removing distractions and focus on the road.

The PA Turnpike operates more than 560 miles of roadway, and more than 200 million people choose to travel on the Turnpike every year – more than 500,000 drivers daily. Despite a record-breaking low of traffic fatalities in 2019, and fewer cars on the road in 2020, deaths on Pennsylvania roadways have increased fifteen percent over the past three years.

Distracted driving, an activity that diverts motorist’s attention from the task of safe driving, is a leading factor in that increase. Distracted driving reached epidemic levels post COVID with one out of every five drivers self-reporting that they drive with distractions on most trips. In 2022, 3,308 people were killed in accidents blamed on distracted driving.

Distracted Driving Month is a national campaign that reminds motorists of the deadly dangers and consequences of distracted driving. To combat this issue, the PA Turnpike launched its “No Game” campaign this month, designed to illustrate the life-changing consequences from this dangerous behavior.

“This annual campaign highlights the serious dangers of distracted driving,” said Craig Shuey, Chief Operating Officer for the PA Turnpike. “While we are committed to working daily to stop unsafe driving behaviors and protect our workers and customers, we can’t do this alone. We need drivers to take this seriously, understand the consequences and help spread the message of the risks that come with distracted driving.”

Here are some tips for passengers to arrive at their destinations safely:

  • Power off your mobile device: Avoid temptation by turning off your device or selecting the Driving Focus Feature on your smartphone.
  • Take advantage of pulling over or parking: The PA Turnpike offers 17 service plazas so you can pull over and park your car when you need to respond to a text or call, check an e-mail or engage in social media.
  • Pre-plan your commute: Program your navigation system before hitting the road and select the “Driving Mode” feature on the 511PA mobile app before you start your commute to receive real-time and hands-free travel alerts and speeds.
  • Prepare your vehicle and secure passengers: Unnecessary distractions or loose items can easily take your eyes off the road.
  • Take the pledge to adopt safe driving habits and avoid distractions – and share with your friends and family.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission's mission is to operate a safe, reliable, customer-valued toll road system that supports national mobility and commerce. As part of its commitment to safety, the PA Turnpike operates a variety of safety initiatives, including the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program, five District Safety Committees and Safety Days for its employees.
