PA Turnpike to Close Overnight Dec. 10 Between Quakertown and Lehigh Valley Interchanges

PA Turnpike to Close Overnight Dec. 10 Between Quakertown and Lehigh Valley Interchanges

Six-hour, I-476 closure needed for overhead bridge beam removal.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the Northeast Extension (I-476) will be closed in both directions on Sunday, Dec. 10 from 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. between the Quakertown Interchange, Exit 44, Bucks County, and the Lehigh Valley Interchange, Exit 56, Lehigh County.

The closure is necessary for the protection of motorists and workers so crews can safely remove overhead bridge beams.  The bridge, which carries Tilghman Street Bridge over the Turnpike, crosses I-476 at milepost A57.06 in Lehigh County.

During the road closure, the northbound and southbound entry and exit ramps will be closed to all traffic at the Allentown Service Plaza. Visitors that do not exit the service plaza prior to 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 will have to remain in the service plaza until the work is completed and the ramps are reopened to traffic.  The Allentown Service Plaza is located on I-476 northbound and southbound at milepost 55.9 in Lehigh County.

Motorists should seek alternate options for fuel, food, and restrooms by using the nearest available interchange on I-476, depending on your travel destination.

Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on closures and detours. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly.

Northbound Detour

Exit at the Quakertown Interchange, Exit 44. Take State Route 663 north to State Route 309 north to Interstate 78 west, then to State Route 309 north.  Follow to U.S. Route 22 west or Tilghman Street west. Re-enter the PA Turnpike at the Lehigh Valley Interchange, Exit 56.

Southbound Detour
