PA Turnpike to Hold Open House for Mon/Fayette Expressway

PA Turnpike to Hold Open House for Mon/Fayette Expressway

Turnpike representatives will be on-hand to provide overview of first construction section.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is planning to hold its first community open house for the Mon/Fayette Expressway PA Route 51 to I-376 Project. Due to the scope and magnitude of the project, it was divided into two sections, south and north of the Monongahela River.

The Mon Fayette Expressway (MFE) is a project that was mandated by the state legislature in 1985 to build with the purpose of boosting the economy in the Mon Valley. The passing of Act 89 in 2013 provided a funding stream for this project to continue.

The funding allows the PTC to start construction on the southern section of the project, which runs from where the current Mon/Fayette Expressway (PA Turnpike 43) ends at PA Route 51 in Jefferson Hills Borough to PA Route 837 in Duquesne, Allegheny County. The southern section is divided into seven construction sections.

This first construction section (53A1) was awarded to Trumbull Corp. in January. It will extend approximately three miles from PA Route 51 to Coal Valley Road in Jefferson Hills Borough in Allegheny County.

The open house for this specific construction section (53A1) will be held:

March 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Jefferson Hills Borough Building (Library Entrance in rear of building)

925 Old Clairton Road

Jefferson Hills, PA 15025

PTC representatives and contracted project specialists will be available to discuss future road closures, detours, blasting zones and additional construction-related information about the 53A1 section of the Mon/Fayette Expressway (MFE).

For those not able to attend the meeting in person, the information will be posted to the project website at www.paturnpike.com/monfayette. The community is encouraged to submit their questions through the comment form available on the website, which project engineers will answer.

The nearly $214 million contract requires Trumbull Corp. to excavate more than four million cubic yards of earth and build six bridges. Five of the bridges will be built as part of the mainline Mon/Fayette Expressway while the sixth will carry PA Route 885 over the Mon/Fayette Expressway. A cashless toll point will also be built within this section.

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson Inc. (JMT) of Hunt Valley, Maryland will manage the construction of the entire eight-mile southern section of the MFE. This project will require JMT to provide cost, schedule and quality control while complying with all PTC, state, and federal highway construction requirements.

The Mon/Fayette Expressway currently stretches 54 miles from I-68 near Morgantown, WV to PA Route 51 in Jefferson Hills, Allegheny County. When the entire MFE is finished, it will extend 68 miles to I-376 in Monroeville, Allegheny County.
