Possible Delays Expected on Northeast Extension Near Hawk Falls Bridge
CARBON COUNTY, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) is alerting travelers of possible delays expected on the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike (Interstate 476).
Traffic paces may occur for a 15-minute period between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7 to allow PA Turnpike personnel and construction crews to safely conduct controlled operations on the old structure at the Hawk Falls Bridge (MP 88.59) project. During the paces, PA Turnpike maintenance crews and PA State Police will stop traffic or restrict traffic to a speed of 20-25 miles per hour. Motorists in the area should be prepared for slow-moving traffic and possible stoppages.
Changeable Message Signs will alert drivers in the area of the potential for paces and motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.
In May, The PA Turnpike opened a new bridge as part of an $88 million project that enhances safety and mobility for the area, while improving the overall functionality of the bridge. The new bridge supports two lanes of traffic in each direction and increases shoulder and median width to support safer travel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a crucial improvement as passenger and commercial traffic volumes in this area are higher than pre-pandemic numbers, now averaging more than 24,000 vehicles per day. The new bridge reduces long-term maintenance needs and improves longevity through using weathering steel and eliminating expansion joints.
Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and its project partners received the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) National Recognition Award for the Hawk Falls Bridge, honoring outstanding engineering projects that contribute to improving safety, quality of life and community connections across various sectors.
