PA Turnpike Celebrating 75 Years!

75TH ANNIVERSARY Car Show banner

Car ShowThe Pa. Turnpike’s 75th Anniversary Car Show held at Sideling Hill Service Plaza on Aug. 8 was a huge success! Approximately 300 vehicles were displayed on the front lawn of the service plaza for all to enjoy.

Hot dogs and Coca Cola products were sold at special 1940 prices by HMSHost, the company that manages Pa. Turnpike service plazas, which also supplied the music for the day. Sunoco Inc., another plaza partner of the Pa. Turnpike, paid the Turnpike tolls for all drivers who brought a vehicle to display at the car show.

75th Anniversary Turnpike items were given to participants for correct answers to trivia questions, while Coca Cola prizes were handed out to customers through a random ticket drawing. In addition, Pa. Turnpike 75th Anniversary memorabilia was on sale - including a hard-cover picture book depicting 75 years of Pa. Turnpike history. All of the items can be purchased through this Pa. Turnpike website.

Four special awards were also handed out to car owners at the end of the day. Those receiving recognition were:

  • Del Border of Glen Rock, PA with a 1962 Austin Healey for the People’s Choice Award
  • Les Harris of Pittsgrove, NJ with a 1959 Ford Galaxie for the Furthest Traveled (193.5 miles one way)
  • Gary Collins of Crystal Springs, PA with a 1965 Ford Mustang for the CEO Choice
  • Thomas Bianculli of Cranberry Twp., PA with a 1940 Buick for the Best 1940 Vehicle. This vehicle was chosen by members of the Antique Auto Club of America in Hershey because it best represented what would have been driven on the Pa. Turnpike when it first opened Oct. 1, 1940.

A big thank you goes out to all who participated, worked and staffed this successful event!
