Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Recognized as 2025 Info-Tech Innovator of the Year Award Winner

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Recognized as 2025 Info-Tech Innovator of the Year Award Winner

Middletown, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has been recognized as a 2025 Info-Tech Innovator of the Year Award winner by Info-Tech Research Group, a global leader in IT research and advisory.

The Info-Tech Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in IT, recognizing both individual leaders and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and impact. The Info-Tech Innovator of the Year Award recognizes organizations that have implemented groundbreaking IT initiatives to drive organizational success, solve challenges, enhance efficiency, or set new industry standards.

“We are proud to be an industry leader that is embodying the spirit of innovation within all areas of our operations,” said Mark Compton, CEO of the PA Turnpike. “Congratulations to the various department across our organization who are part of this well-deserved recognition, one that underscores their efforts to find innovative ways to enhance customer service, safety, responsibility and efficiency, not only within the Pennsylvania Turnpike but also across the broader transportation and mobility industry.”

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission was recognized for its Elevate IT initiative, a program that embeds technology into all operations to address underdelivered projects. Launched in 2017, Elevate IT doubled project delivery success from 50% on time and within scope to 100% by 2024, while growing its technology program tenfold.

Major projects include:

  • Modernizing its toll collections and improving safety through Open Road Tolling.
  • Bringing online a 500-mile Fiber Optic Broadband Network to empower electronic tolling and connected and automated vehicle technology, provide access to underserved communities and generate additional non-toll revenue.
  • Developing a new back-office system to meet ever-changing consumer needs, provide a more streamlined customer experience and integrate tolling, customer service and mobility services into a seamless digital platform.
  • Building strong business relationships and supporting departmental needs, achieving a 4.8/5 help desk score and nearly 90% Business Relationship Management (BRM) score.
  • Enhancing customer services through AI and analytics in transportation, including the launch of its own chatbot, Miles.
  • Streamlining finance, HR and operations through a new multi-year ERP upgrade.
  • Supporting the PA Turnpike’s goal to be America’s First Sustainable Superhighway by 2040 through inductive charging, microgrids and alternative fuel integration.

“This is a nice recognition that reflects both our department and the whole organization. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished both in IT and across the entire organization to see how we are leaning into that forward-thinking mindset and leveraging technology not only from a business standpoint but also to improve customer service and safety,” said PA Turnpike Chief Technology and Growth Officer Bob Taylor. “The culture we’ve created here at the Pennsylvania Turnpike, where individuals feel comfortable and empowered to do what needs to be done and emerge in their roles, it’s really an exciting place to be.”

The 2025 Info-Tech Award winners were selected from a competitive pool of hundreds of candidates. The Innovator of the Year Award winners were determined by the measurable impact and exceptional value the organization has achieved through IT innovation.

“The 2025 Info-Tech Awards' Innovator of the Year category honors organizations that turned new ideas into measurable outcomes, moving from rapid pilots to scaled delivery,” says Tom Zehren, Chief Executive Officer at Info-Tech Research Group. “This year’s winners solved defined business problems, improved efficiency, and increased performance and competitiveness. Together, these organizations show what’s possible when ingenuity meets purpose.”
