PA Turnpike Announces State Route 130 Interchange Project in Westmoreland County is Underway

The new interchange will link the PA Turnpike and State Route 130 in Penn Township.

Harrisburg, PA (August 24, 2023) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) recently announced the beginning of the preliminary engineering design phase for a new interchange to link the Turnpike and State Route 130 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County.

The new State Route 130 Turnpike Interchange will provide improved access to neighboring counties and employment centers from the Turnpike and encourage economic development in Westmoreland County. The interchange will be located between the Turnpike’s Irwin (Exit 67) and Pittsburgh (Exit 57) interchanges, in the vicinity of Turnpike Milepost 63, and allow for access from both westbound and eastbound directions.

In October 2021, the PTC announced that the project could advance since the agency had been released from the PA Act 44 of 2007 mandate to provide $450 million annually to PennDOT to help fund Commonwealth transit operations. The new State Route 130 Interchange project also benefits from the PA Turnpike’s conversion to Open Road Tolling (ORT) — a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas or tollbooths.

The PTC will host an open-house plans display at a future time in conjunction with this project. The date for the open house as well as updates on the project’s progress will be announced as details become available. The PTC recently sent letters to nearby businesses and property owners to announce the start of the project. Another notification letter will soon be sent to property owners to advise them that project team members may need access to or through their property to conduct field work, surveys, and environmental investigations. This round of notification letters will not contain language regarding property acquisition.
