PA Turnpike to close overnight between Allegheny Valley and Pittsburgh interchanges
Five-hour closure needed Oct. 17 for bridge beam removal.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists of a bi-directional closure between Allegheny Valley, Exit 48, and Pittsburgh, Exit 57, starting at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 16 through 5 a.m. on Oct. 17, weather permitting.
This five-hour closure is needed for crews to safely remove bridge beams from the original overhead bridge which carries traffic on Center Road over the turnpike at milepost 54.95 in Monroeville, Allegheny County.
Drivers are being asked to use the following recommended detours:
EASTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Allegheny Valley Interchange:
Freeport Road (.7 mile) to
PA State Route 910 west (.5 mile) to
PA State Route 28 south (12 miles) to
I-579 south/Veterans Bridge (1.5 miles) to
I-376 east to PA Turnpike (Exit 85) (13.5 miles)
Re-enter I-76 at the Pittsburgh Interchange.
WESTBOUND TRAFFIC Exiting at Pittsburgh Interchange:
I-376 west (16 miles) to
I-279 north/Ft. Duquesne Bridge (1 mile) to
PA State Route 28 north (23 miles) to
PA State Route 910 east (Exit 11, Harmarville) (.2 mile)
Left onto Freeport Road (.7 mile)
Re-enter I-76 at the Allegheny Valley Interchange.
During the closure, expect higher traffic volumes on detour roads. Message boards will be in place to inform customers of the closure.
Throughout the evening prior to the closure, information will be posted, and announcements will be made at the Oakmont/Plum service plaza to warn customers that they will not be permitted to continue driving after 11 p.m. on Oct. 16.
The bridge replacement is an early-action project for the future total reconstruction project between milepost 53 and 57. For more information on this project go to https://www.patpconstruction.com/mp53to57/construction.aspx .
