Traffic Restrictions for PA Turnpike’s Kittatinny/Blue Mountain Tunnels in Franklin County

Traffic shifts needed for surveying work in the tunnels.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike alerts motorists approaching the Kittatinny and Blue Mountain tunnels of traffic shifts slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 8 until 4:30 p.m., and at again at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 through 4:30 p.m. The tunnels are located in Franklin County between the Willow Hill Exit #189 and Blue Mountain Exit #201.

On Dec. 8, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the eastbound tunnel lanes will be closed, and traffic will crossover to the westbound tunnel which will be bi-directional. The westbound tunnels will be closed on Dec. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and traffic will crossover to the eastbound tunnel which will be bi-directional. This work will be weather permitting.

Motorist should slow down to posted speed limits when entering the traffic shifts into the tunnels.
The closures are needed for the consultant, Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, to conduct surveys of the tunnels and roadway, which will include the use of mobile LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanning through the tunnels. The use of LiDAR scanning allows the consultant to capture highly accurate roadway and tunnel data safely and efficiently. These surveys will provide information needed in preparation for any future tunnel rehabilitation projects.
