IBTTA and PA Turnpike Commission Coordinate Volunteer Effort at Milk and Honey Farms

IBTTA and PA Turnpike Commission Coordinate Volunteer Effort at Milk and Honey Farms

Harrisburg, PA (June 24, 2018)— Today, the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission led more than 100 volunteers at a community service project at Milk & Honey Farms. Owned and operated by Tim Wallace, Milk & Honey Farms is a nonprofit farm that focuses on veterans and provides fresh fruit and vegetables for those at risk for hunger in South Central Pennsylvania.

Coordinated as part of IBTTA’s Annual Maintenance & Roadway Operations Workshop, which is being held in Harrisburg this year, the service project connects conference attendees with local non-profit projects at the grassroots level.

“Milk & Honey Farms was selected because we could immediately see the exemplary work Tim Wallace was doing,” said Pat Jones, IBTTA CEO. “We also felt our team would be the right fit to lend their skills and accomplish some good to benefit the South Central Pennsylvania community.”

“My vision for our fourth-generation family farm was to focus on veterans in need,” said Tim Wallace. “I am honoring my dad, grandfather and great-grandfather who all served in the army and I think they would be pleased that I, as an army veteran, would carry on that tradition of service. Plus, there is nothing better than working the land and the soil.”

“Our group started early this morning and will go all day to finish building a barn and a pond-retaining wall, clear brush, split logs, seal rampways and even repair the chicken coop,” said Craig Shuey, PA Turnpike COO. “It has been great working with our colleagues from all over the country to get this done. We may be tired heading back to the conference but it’s all worth it.”

The farm also offers garden plots, so community volunteers can help plant, tend, grow, and harvest crops for local food banks, churches and veterans’ organizations to distribute to those in need.
