Project Newsletter
November 2008
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in
cooperation with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, circulated the
Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS)/Section 404
Permit Application for the proposed Southern Beltway Project
from I-79 to the Mon/Fayette Expressway on November 14,
2008. It will be available for review through December 15,
2008 at local municipal offices, libraries and other public
locations (list
of local public locations). It can also be viewed
on the Internet
here.
The FEIS addresses the 12.5-mile project from I-79 near the
Allegheny/Washington County line to the Mon/Fayette
Expressway (Turnpike 43) near Finleyville. Green Option
1A/Tan-Red Alternative, located exclusively in Washington
County, is identified as the Preferred Alternative (See map
on page 2). The Preferred Alternative traverses Cecil
Township, North Strabane Township, Peters Township,
Nottingham Township, and Union Township. It would cross over
Little Chartiers Creek, a portion of Canonsburg Lake (a
public recreation area owned by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat
Commission), and U.S. Route 19 approximately 1,500 feet
south of Waterdam Road's intersection with Route 19.

News Release
PA Turnpike to Close Mon/Fayette Office in Duquesne
February 2009
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will close its Mon/Fayette Expressway, PA
Route 51 to I-376 Project Office in Duquesne, Pa. effective 3 p.m. on Friday,
March 6. The decision to close the office was necessitated by declining customer
visits and a pause in project advancement due to funding limitations.
The field office was originally opened in June 2005 to provide direct access and
information regarding project development to local communities throughout the
project area. Since its opening, the project office staff met with and answered
questions from nearly 2,000 visitors and hosted 140 project coordination and
other community-based, project-oriented events. However, visits to the office by
local residents have significantly declined over the past year, and the decision
to close the office was made in the interest of cost effectiveness.
