DISTRACTED DRIVING ISN'T A GAME.
Everyone wins when we all get to our destination safely.
Every traffic fatality involves 3 elements: the driver, the roadway, and the vehicle. The majority of all traffic crashes, 85-90%, are caused by or made worse by driver error. Don’t let distracted driving be the reason you or anyone else gets game over. Put away your phone, be considerate to other drivers, and — most importantly — stay focused.

Statistics
Despite a record-breaking low of traffic fatalities in 2019, and fewer cars on the road in 2020, deaths on Pennsylvania roadways have increased a whopping 15% over the past three years. Distracted driving is a leading factor in that increase.
During the coronavirus pandemic, with fewer drivers on the road, those who did travel did so at significantly higher speeds and got into the habit of paying less and less attention to the road.
As more drivers returned to the road, record-breaking incidents of distracted driving created an increased risk of harm on our roadway with more frequent and dangerous crashes.
It is time to break the habit of distracted driving. It is not a game.
Four Ways to Delete the Distractions
When driving the PA Turnpike, there is no such thing as multi-tasking. Your one and only job is to get you and your passengers to their destination safely. Here are some tips to help you do that.

Recognize the risks
We all know distracted driving when we see it in others. It’s anything that takes your attention away from the task of driving. Operating an electronic device, drowsiness, eating and applying makeup are some of the biggest risks.

Power down your phone
On the PA Turnpike, a driver should only use a phone for emergencies and then only after you’ve safely pulled over. Even hands-free devices can divert your attention and cause an accident.

Preparation is key
Think through your trip before you get started. Preprogram your music and navigation. Be sure that wipers, fluids and headlights are road-ready. And clear your vehicle of any unnecessary distractions or loose items.

Avoid eating while driving
Unwrapping and spilling food are the cause of many fatal accidents. The PA Turnpike provides several convenient, clean service plaza areas where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, grab a bite to eat, and quickly get on your way.
