Traffic restrictions slated for PA Turnpike’s Kittatinny and Blue Mountain Tunnels in Franklin County

Tunnel maintenance planned for Sept. 7 through Sept. 23.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike alerts motorists approaching the Kittatinny and Blue Mountain tunnels, that traffic shifts are slated for certain weekdays, beginning the week of Sept. 7 and continuing through Sept. 23. The tunnels are located in Franklin County between the Willow Hill Interchange, exit 189, and Blue Mountain Interchange, exit 201. The planned, daily traffic restrictions are needed for workers to safely perform annual tunnel maintenance and will occur weather permitting.

Westbound tunnel closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, from Sept. 7 until Sept.9, and again Monday through Thursday, form Sept. 13 until Sept. 16.  During that time, traffic will crossover to the eastbound tunnels and will be bi-directional.

Eastbound tunnel closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from Sept. 20 until Sept. 23. Traffic will crossover to the westbound tunnels and will be bi-directional.

Motorists should be alert and drive with extreme caution in these areas. It is imperative vehicles slow down to posted speed limits when entering the traffic shifts into the tunnels. Additionally, there may be some delays and motorists should be prepared for slow or stopped traffic approaching the tunnels. Motorists should seek alternate routes or plan extra time for their travels.
