Westbound PA Turnpike Now Closed at Breezewood Interchange

Closure needed to accommodate emergency bridge repairs in Bedford County.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 70/76) has been temporarily closed to westbound traffic between the Breezewood Interchange, Exit 161, and the New Stanton Interchange, Exit 75. The 86-mile closure became necessary when a more than 10-mile queue developed after crews closed the right lane at milepost 130 earlier today to make emergency bridge-deck repairs.

Westbound motorists on the PA Turnpike should stay alert for heavy congestion with slow-moving or stopped traffic as they approach the Breezewood Exit; obey posted speed limits and use extra caution. The Turnpike’s Traffic Operations Center will continue to monitor the queue and reassess traffic conditions throughout the evening.

DETOUR ROUTE: From the Breezewood Interchange/161, follow I-70 east (Washington, D.C.) 24 miles to exit 1A (68/40 West, Cumberland, Maryland) 65.5 miles to exit 14B (Uniontown) following 40 west to U.S. 119 north 63 miles to exit 1B (PA Turnpike). Reenter the PA Turnpike at the New Stanton Interchange/75.

Crews continue to repair damaged pavement in the westbound right lane of the bridge carrying PA Turnpike traffic over State Route 3012 (New Baltimore Road) in Bedford County. The work is expected to be done by 10 a.m. on June 21. After the detour is lifted at Breezewood, a 2.5 mile right-lane closure will remain in effect between milepost 132 and milepost 129.5. Motorists are urged to obey speed limits and be alert when approaching the area.
