Information on Transporting Placarded Loads

Currently, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission guidelines on transporting hazardous materials through its five tunnels are as followed:

The new regulations permit the transportation of formerly prohibited Table 2 materials in restricted non-bulk packages only.

Placards that have previously been permitted shall remain unrestricted.
All Table 1 Materials and All Explosives remain prohibited.

Explosives	Inhalation Hazard	Dangerous When Wet	Inhalation Hazard	Radioactive

Placards prohibited in bulk packaging:



Flammable Gas	Flammable	Flammable Solid	Spontaneously Combustable



Organic Peroxide	Oxidizer	Corrosive	Poison

Requirement for Hazardous Materials Permits:

Currently, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission no longer requires commercial carriers to obtain a permit in order to transport hazardous materials on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

All carriers are expected to comply with the U.S. DOT Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR 170-179) while traveling on the Turnpike. These rules will be strictly enforced by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop “T”.
