HARRISBURG, Pa. (Friday,
November 08, 2002) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced
today that traffic in the Allegheny Tunnel, Somerset County (milepost
122-123), will be limited to one lane in each direction — with two-way
traffic in the westbound (northern) tube.
The single-lane pattern will
begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 9 and be lifted on Sunday Nov. 10 no later
than 8 a.m.
The 12-hour shutdown of the
eastbound (southern) tube will allow maintenance crews to complete imperative
work to prepare the facility for winter operation. The work involves replacing
lighting and reflectors, repairing tiles, cleaning the tunnel’s drainage
system, repainting lines, and servicing the tunnel’s fire extinguishers and
carbon-monoxide detectors.
All planned work is weather
sensitive and could be delayed or postponed.
Travelers
are urged to be especially cautious while traveling through the Allegheny
Tunnel after 8 p.m. Saturday.
