WHO: PA Turnpike Commission officials, PA Motor Truck Association President Jim Runk, representative from Summers Trucking of Ephrata. WHAT: Representative from Summers Trucking will be the first commercial customer to use E-ZPass on the PA Turnpike. WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, 8 a.m. WHERE:
Harrisburg West, Exit 18. SIGNIFICANCE: The PA Turnpike Commission launched E-ZPass regionally in Dec. 2000. At that time, the Commission committed to improving and expanding the system, and including commercial vehicle customers as soon as possible. Since then, the Commission expanded E-ZPass statewide and enrolled over 250,000 non-commercial customers in the electronic toll collection program. On Dec. 14, 2002, the Commission will fulfill its commitment to include commercial vehicle customers in the E-ZPass program. Commercial
vehicles are defined as class two vehicles and above, or any vehicle
weighing greater than 7,000 pounds. The
commercial vehicle designation also includes fleets of class one vehicles
or passenger cars, which offer commercial services. A commercial vehicle account may be opened for one car, one
truck or a number of vehicles. Companies
that are currently enrolled in E-ZPass through another agency can open a
companion account with the PA Turnpike, allowing them to take advantage of
volume discounts. The PA Motor Truck Association, in cooperation with the PA Turnpike Commission, selected one of its members, Summers Trucking of Ephrata, Pa. to be the first commercial customer to use E-ZPass on the PA Turnpike at 8 a.m. on Dec. 14.
