A groundbreaking ceremony was held in the spring of 2006 to mark the start of construction on what later became known as Phase 1 of the project.

In the fall of 2007 a press conference was held to announce that the entire Uniontown to Brownsville project would be completed. The remaining six construction sections to complete the Expressway/Route 119 interchange and the western portion of the project will be under construction beginning in April 2008.
