OUR People

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is a top-notch transportation agency because of the quality and professionalism of our workforce. We have some of the best people in the highway business working on behalf of our 190 million annual customers and all Pennsylvanians.
toll collector

Our 2,037 men and women - accountants, customer service representatives, dispatchers, engineers, safety specialists, toll collectors and others - adhere to the highest professional standards. As a result of Act 44 of 2007, our workforce has adopted a new mission: to operate the Turnpike system as entrepreneurs, delivering more for our customers and travelers across Pennsylvania.

  • The Commission’s field labor force is mainly comprised of 750 toll collectors who staff the 66 toll plazas statewide and 695 workers who provide high quality maintenance operations from 21 maintenance sheds across the Turnpike.
  • We employ 33 Professional Engineers (PEs) and top-level architects, environmental scientists, surveyors, geologists, and construction field staff that hold NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) and NECEPT (Northeast Center of Excellence for Pavement Technology) certifications.
  • Turnpike employees take pride in keeping the road open in the most severe weather, continuing a 70-year heritage of excellence. Our maintenance personnel work tirelessly during storms to make sure the Turnpike is open and clear of snow and ice.
  • As a part of our streamlining efforts, our 2,037-member workforce is down 8.4 percent since 1999. We’ve reduced complement by 97 positions since November 2008 via voluntary early retirements and position eliminations.
