Rules Regarding Over Dimensional Vehicles

Due to safety considerations, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission requires special permits for over dimensional vehicles. There are also restrictions as to the time of day the vehicles may travel as well as holiday restrictions.

Permits

When a permit is required:

A permit is required if the vehicle’s dimensions exceed any of the following:

Length:

85 feet

Weight:
125,000 lbs. (Vehicles weighing 100,001 to 125,000 lbs. do not require a permit;
however they are charged a Class 9 Fare)

Axle Weight:
22,400 lbs.

Height:
13’6”

Width:
Over 10’ to max of 11’6”

Exceptions:
Maximum width between (115) Wyoming Valley Ramp and (131) Clarks Summit Ramp (Northeast Extension), and on Turnpike 576 is 14 feet.
The maximum width on Turnpike 43, I-376, 66, is 14 feet.

Note: Vehicles between 8’6” wide and 10’ wide do not require a permit, but must follow time of day travel restrictions.

When an Escort Vehicle is Required in Addition to the Permit:

1) Total vehicle length is over 90’
2) Total vehicle width over 11’ 
3) Total vehicle width over 11’6” between interchanges 115 to 131
4) Total vehicle width over 11’6” on Turnpike 43, I-376, 66, and 576
5) Bumper overhang of 5’ front or 15’ rear
6) Or at the discretion of the Turnpike Commission due to safety concerns

When a Special Hauling Authorization is required:

1)Total vehicle weight in excess of 125,000 lbs.
2)An axle weight of 25,000 lbs.

When a State Police escort is required:

If total vehicle length is over 160’, an escort by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop T is required.

Holiday Travel Restrictions:

The following are the remaining 2012/2013 holiday restrictions for all over-dimensional vehicles:

  • Christmas 2012:
    Noon, Friday, December 21, 2012 to Sunrise, Wednesday, December 26, 2012
  • New Year's Day:
    Noon, Saturday, December 29, 2012 to Sunrise, Wednesday, January 2, 2013
  • Good Friday/Easter:
    Sundown, Thursday, March 28, 2013 to Sunrise, Monday, April 1, 2013
  • Memorial Day:
    Noon, Friday, May 24, 2013 to Sunrise, Tuesday, May 28, 2013
  • July 4th:
    Noon, Wednesday, July 3, 2013 to Sunrise, Friday, July 5, 2013
  • Labor Day:
    Noon, Friday, August 30, 2013 to Sunrise, Tuesday, September 3, 2013
  • Thanksgiving:
    Sundown, Tuesday, November 26, 2013 to Sunrise, Monday, December 2, 2013
  • Christmas 2013:
    Noon, Saturday, December 21, 2013 to Sunrise, Thursday, December 26, 2013



Time of Day Travel Restrictions:

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, all over dimensional movements must travel between dawn and dusk Monday to Thursday, and between dawn and noon on Friday.

From Labor Day to Memorial Day, all over dimensional movements must travel between dawn and dusk Monday to Friday, and between dawn and noon on Saturday.

Vehicles between 8’6” wide and 10’ wide do not require a permit but must follow the time of day restrictions.

How to Obtain a Permit:

Click here (http://www.paturnpike.com/permit/) to apply for a permit. You may also call the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission at (717) 939-9551, ext. 2980  (then push #2 on the phone tree).

If applying for a permit for a vehicle that requires special authorization, axle weight and axle spacing information is needed.  A copy of the PENNDOT Oversize/Overweight application for special hauling permit will be required.

Office Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Office is closed for the following holidays: 
New Year’s Day, Martin L. King's Birthday, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day

All Turnpike permits expire after five authorized travel days have elapsed, in accordance with above mentioned travel restrictions.
