Bright
yellow call boxes, emblazoned with the word
"HELP" in large red letters, are
positioned at one-mile intervals along both
sides of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The emergency
call boxes give distressed or disabled motorists
in need of assistance a direct link to the
Turnpike’s Operations Center in Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania.
The emergency call boxes are not an actual
voice communication device. Rather, travelers
requiring assistance need only press the appropriate
button, and a message is sent to the Center
where the caller’s location and type
of service requested is displayed on a video
terminal. Radio operators immediately dispatch
the proper authorities to the scene. |

Each
emergency call box has four buttons.
To call for assistance, just pull
down the white handle and press the
appropriate button:
"Service"
if you need emergency road service
because of a vehicle breakdown.
"Police" if you need the
State Police.
"Medical" if you need emergency
medical services.
"Accident" if you are involved
in or come across a motor vehicle
accident.
When the "Accident" button
is pressed, the Operations Center
immediately dispatches the State Police,
a tow truck, fire company and emergency
medical services.
IN CASE OF A FIRE, PRESS THE "ACCIDENT"
BUTTON.
Within
seconds of pressing an emergency call
box button, you will receive a signal
light and alarm tone indicating that
your message was received, and help
is on the way. |
