E-ZPass – How does it work?

What is E-ZPass?

E-ZPass is the name for the transponder-based electronic toll collection system currently available to Turnpike users.

How does it work?

E-ZPass allows customers to drive through toll plazas using designated lanes without stopping while the toll is deducted from a prepaid account. A device, called a transponder, is provided for placement in or on the vehicle. The device sends a signal that is read in the lane for billing purposes.

How do I get E-ZPass?

There are a variety of ways to obtain an E-ZPass transponder: Most people join online at www.paturnpike.com/ezpass or by calling 1-877-PENNPASS (1-877-736-6727). Customers can also get E-ZPass at a variety of retail locations and select AAA offices; and E-ZPass vending machines are located at some Turnpike service plazas. Visit our website for a list of retail locations near you.

Can I save money with E-ZPass?

Yes. E-ZPass customers currently pay about 25 percent less, on average, than those who pay with cash. Rates for non-E-ZPass customers are higher because it costs more to collect a cash toll compared to collecting electronically.

Can the transponder be moved from vehicle to vehicle?

One transponder can be moved between multiple vehicles provided those vehicles and corresponding license plates are on the account.

Can I get a monthly statement in the mail?

Yes, but there is a $4 monthly fee for paper invoices. All customers can access a monthly statement online at no cost.

Does my Pennsylvania E-ZPass work in other states?

Yes. A Pennsylvania-issued E-ZPass works at any toll facility where the purple and white E-ZPass logo is shown. One transponder can be used in 15 states that accept E-ZPass.
