The
Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission opened the 7.8 mile Fayette
County leg of the Mon/Fayette Expressway on March 1, 2000.
This project, also known as the 'Mason-Dixon Link', stretches
from PA Route 43 and will eventually end near Interstate 68
in West Virginia. The opening for the PA portion of
this project followed a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by
former PA Governor Tom Ridge and former WV Governor Cecil
Underwood. Immediately following the ribbon cutting
ceremony the West Virginia Department of Transportation and
Governor Underwood held a groundbreaking ceremony for the
additional 4.2 miles of roadway in West Virginia. The
West Virginia portion of the roadway is currently under construction.
The I-68 to Turnpike 43 Project begins with interchanges with Interstate 68 and Route 857, just east of Cheat Lake in Monongalia County, West Virginia. It then proceeds north, generally paralleling Route 857, through the valley area between PA Route 857 and US Route 119. It ends with the completion of the interchange with PA Route 43 (the Chadville Demonstration Project) and Big Six Road in Georges Township, Fayette County, just west of the Fayette Business Park. Interchanges provide access to Interstate 68 and Route 857 in West Virginia; Gans Road in Springhill Township, Fayette County; Rubles Mill Road in Georges Township, Fayette County; and Big Six Road. Toll collection facilities have been built on the northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp at the Rubles Mill Road Interchange. A mainline toll plaza is located about one mile north of Rubles Mill Road near Haydentown. |
