PA Route 22 to I-79 - B-1 Alternative

The B-1 Alternative was developed as a connection between U.S. Route 22 and Interstate 79, with a route to the north and east of McDonald Borough. The B-1 Alternative originates at a proposed interchange with U.S. Route 22 between the existing Champion and Bavington Interchanges in Washington County. The Alternative extends south from the U.S. Route 22 interchange and crosses under Candor Road and over Beech Hollow Road. An interchange would be provided at Beech Hollow Road.

The B-1 Alternative then proceeds in an easterly direction and crosses over PA Route 980 and the Montour Trail and then turns south and parallels east of PA Route 980 before crossing over North Branch Road. An interchange with North Branch Road would be provided to allow local access.

The B-1 Alternative continues east, crossing over Valley Street and into North Fayette Township, Allegheny County. The Alternative passes to the north and east of McDonald Borough, crossing over Noblestown Road and into South Fayette Township, Allegheny County. The Alternative is located in this area to minimize impacts to the residential communities of McDonald Borough and the community of Sturgeon.

After crossing Noblestown Road, the B-1 Alternative proceeds south and traverses over Robinson Run Road, parallel to the east of the Allegheny/Washington County line within Allegheny County. The realignment of Cecil-Reissing Road, Laurel Hill Road and Robinson Run Road is proposed in this area. The Alternative continues south along the county line and provides an interchange location with a direct connection to the existing four-lane section of PA Route 50.

Continuing southeast from the crossing of PA Route 50, the B-1 Alternative cuts through a large hillside and proceeds under Hickory Grade Road. The Alternative crosses Karmann Road and County Line Road, before interchanging with Interstate 79 to just north of the Allegheny and Washington county line.

The overall length of the B-1 Alternative is approximately 12.8 miles.
