While Act 44 allows up to 10 toll locations, preliminary studies indicate only nine toll zones are needed to capture the regional and long distance users of I-80. Within each of the tolling zones, two to three individual locations are being studied in detail. Upon completion of traffic and revenue studies and public review of the sites, only one tolling location will be identified for each of the nine zones detailed above.
The PTC is carefully considering how each tolling location would affect traffic on I-80 and surrounding roadways. After reviewing the potential diversions contained in the presentations above, the Turnpike has offered an incentive to keep drivers on I-80. EZPass customers driving 2-axle passenger vehicles will NOT pay a toll UNTIL the SECOND TOLLING POINT. This will REDUCE the traffic diversions presented by 60 to 80 percent, depending on location.
These preliminary tolling options were presented to legislators and regional planning agencies in July and early August for review and comments.
A second round of Public Meetings will be scheduled after a response is received from the FHWA on the Phase I application.
