Rendering of an Open Road Tolling facility

The tolled I-80 corridor will have Open Road Tolling (ORT) which involves 100% electronic toll collection. As a vehicle passes through a tolling point at highway speeds, the vehicle’s E-ZPass tag is read or a photograph of its license plate is taken and an invoice is sent for payment. This system differs greatly from the current toll collection method on the Turnpike mainline which is based on a closed tolling system that requires payment at every interchange.

The state-of-the-art ORT technology allows the PTC to collect tolls electronically using E-ZPass or video tolling which eliminates the need for cash transactions while offering many benefits including:

  • No traffic delays
  • Reduced vehicle emissions
  • Increased fuel efficiency
  • Minimal property impacts
  • Improved safety
  • Lower construction costs
  • Lower operating costs
