In order to make traveling easier and reduce congestion, many states in the northeastern United States have been switching to the electronic toll collection system E–ZPass. When a user signs up for E–ZPass they receive a small electronic device that can be affixed to the inside of their windshield. Drivers can prepay tolls by opening an account from which tolls are automatically calculated and deducted as the driver passes through the E–ZPass lane.
Pennsylvania is one of the states that implements E–ZPass for its current toll roads. If tolls were to be implemented on Interstate 80 (I–80) in the northern part of the state, E–ZPass would be an option for motorists. E–ZPass saves fuel, time and is environmentally friendly because emissions are reduced since there isn’t any idling time.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has offered drivers who register for E–ZPass, the Turnpike’s electronic toll collection program, a tremendous cost saving incentive to join for traveling on I-80. Non-commercial passenger vehicles using E-ZPass will not be charged a toll until the second toll facility. This allows users to travel, more than 50 miles on average toll free.
