What's there now?
The PTC is currently conducting an inventory of all existing features and facilities associated with the 311-mile I-80 corridor. The inventory includes studies involving traffic and safety information, environmental and community features and engineering detail of the existing facility. Sensitive features will be inventoried so that needed facility upgrades may be identified that are least intrusive to their surroundings.
What more do we need?
Based upon known existing conditions, the project team is in the process of identifying potential locations for Toll Plazas and other support facilities. Safety and mobility upgrades including ramp improvements at interchanges and installation of truck climbing lanes in mountainous areas will also be determined.
What do our "neighbors" think?
Throughout all project development phases, the PTC will work directly with its new neighbors to collect information and obtain feedback. This feedback will result in improvements along the I-80 corridor that are sensitive to community concerns. Limiting environmental and community impacts while enhancing safety and efficiency along I-80 are achievements which will benefit everyone.
Evaluating the Vision
The project team will prepare its documentation for environmental approval. The collaborative process by which toll plaza locations and I-80 improvements were identified and evaluated will be documented. After approval of the studies by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction will follow.
